drawingbenefitsseniorsST. JOHNSBURY - Edward Kadunc, an art instructor in Saint Johnsbury is helping seniors at the Good Living Senior Center grow more than just artistically.

During his two hour classes Kadunc helps challenge seniors in new ways with new forms of thinking, while helping them create their own artistic treasures.

Kadunc works with the seniors twice a month during two hour classes. In the class, seniors learn how to turn seemingly difficult drawing exercises into easy and fun experiences. Kadunc takes each project and breaks the complete drawing into simple shapes that are easier to draw. The seniors in turn use those shapes, to build the complete picture.

"It's sort of solving the puzzle, and I find that really nice and exciting, because people start to work off of each other, they sort of communicate," Kadunc said.

The class is not just for amateurs or beginners. Lilian Willey, a senior that attends the class, has been an artist almost all her life. Lilian enjoys the social experience, and the chance to learn more about art to become a better artist.

"It's a chance to be with people my age, and I get a chance to really work on something. Mr. Ed, has a wonderful teaching experience," Willey said.

Kadunc also gives the seniors basic techniques to use, in order to expand on their drawings and make them better. He says, the more complicated the project, the more seniors seem to enjoy it.

"We sort of keep it not too complicated, but we want to touch on certain basic elements of drawing. If you execute those basic elements you can end up with a good drawing," Kadunc explained.

The two classes this month will be held on Oct. 24th and the 31st.
