Maple Syrup Tubing

syrup tubingNORTHEAST KINGDOM - It's been a slow start to the sugaring season for maple syrup lovers. But not to worry, Northeast Kingdom Waste Management says it will still be collecting maple tubing at the end of the month.

The tubing collection program is just about four years old and it covers towns all over the Northeast Kingdom including right up to the Canadian border.

"Right now it's such a young program so we're only doing it in April and then again in November," Said Northeast Kingdom Waste Management Executive Director, Paul Tomasi. "We chose those months because that's typically when folks are in the woods repairing lines."

In order for your tubing to be able to be collected it must pass a "float test." Some people may not know what that is so... what exactly is it? Well if you want to recycle your old tubing you'll have to make sure it floats. The process is more simple than you may think, first you have to cut about two inches off the end of your old tubing. Second, throw it in a bucket of water. If it floats Northeast Kingdom Waste Management will take it, but if it sinks they won't.

"If it picks up over time we would probably collect year-round," Said Tomasi. "But it takes up a lot of space so we try and get it in in a 30 day period."

Because of the weather conditions Northeast Kingdom Waste Management says it may extend the collection period through the middle of May. If you need to dispose of your tubing, they ask that you call and make an appointment. They also recommend that you call to find out if your tubing is acceptable.
